D.C.M. London Gazette 29 August 1917:

‘For conspicuous gallantry in action. He led a small party of grenadiers, who successfully bombed an enemy saphead and drove back its occupants. He has displayed gallantry on many occasions, and his work has been of the greatest value to the battalion.’

J. Anderson served during the Great War with 2nd Battalion, Royal Highlanders in the French theatre of war from 12 October 1914. He advanced to Acting Colour Sergeant, and left France with the Battalion in November 1915. Anderson served with the Battalion in the Mesopotamian theatre of war from January 1916.
