Herbert Henry Sandilands was appointed 2nd Lieutenant in the Ghazipur Light Horse on 20 December 1889; Lieutenant, 30 June 1893; Captain, 15 January 1897; Captain, United Provinces Horse, 1 April 1904, upon its formation, the former Ghazipur Light Horse becoming the Ghazipur Squadron of the new regiment. Volunteer Decoration awarded in Gazette of India 13 May 1905.
