Army L.S. & G.C., V.R., 3rd issue, small letter reverse (2655. Cook Sergt. J. Hadley. R. Innis: Fus.) edge bruise, very fine £60-80

John Hadley was born in Wolverhampton, Staffordshire, in 1846, and attested for the 19th Foot at Chatham on 16 June 1864. He served with the 1st Battalion as part of Major-General A. T. Wilde’s expedition against the Bazoti Black Mountain tribes on the North West Frontier of India, 3-22 October 1868 (entitled to India General Service Medal with clasp). He transferred to the 108th Foot on 31 July 1871 (later renamed the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers), and was advanced Sergeant on 12 May 1877. He was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal per General Order 43 of 1883, and was discharged on 16 June 1885, after 21 years and 1 day’s service, of which 11 years were spent in India. He died in Lambeth, London, in 1915.
