Leslie Richard Vowles was born in Brighton, Sussex, on 20 December 1929, and attested for the Middlesex Regiment in November 1947. He served with the 1st Battalion in Korea, where the Battalion was involved in many battles including Chonju, Chongchon, Chuam-ni, Kapyong-Chon and Kapyong., and were awarded seven Battle Honours in recognition of its service during the Korean War; more than any other unit during the whole campaign. Vowles was in the Support Company when, on 31 October 1951, he was promoted Lance-Corporal. He probably left the Army in 1954, after seven years’ service.
