James Steptoe was born in Great Marlow, Buckinghamshire, and attested for the King’s Royal Rifle Corps at Wandsworth, Surrey. He served with the 10th Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front, and was killed in action during the Battle of the Somme on 28 August 1918. He is buried in Peronne Road Cemetery, Maricourt, France.

Sold together with a Princess Mary 1914 Christmas tin and an ‘In Memoriam’ card for the recipient.
