Albert Clevely was born in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, on 27 March 1887, and joined the Royal Navy on 12 October 1905. Appointed Sick Bert Attendant on 21 May 1906, much of his service was with various Naval Hospitals, including Haslar, Chatham, Gibraltar, and Egmont (Malta). He joined H.M.S. Minerva on 22 September 1908, and served in her during the Messina Earthquake relief operations in December of that year. He served during the Great War in H.M.S. Champion from 8 December 1915, and was present at the Battle of Jutland, 31 May 1916. He was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 2 November 1920, whilst based at Egmont Naval Hospital in Malta, and was advanced to Sick Berth Chief Petty Officer on 9 September 1924. He was shore pensioned on 11 October 1927, but saw further service during the Second World War. He died at Thanet, Kent, in 1965.
