Four: Farrier Major D. S. Smith, 12th Royal Lancers

Crimea 1854-56, 1 clasp, Sebastopol (Dl. S. Smith. 12th Rl. Lanrs.) contemporary engraved naming; Indian Mutiny 1857-59, 1 clasp, Central India (Serjt. D, S, Smith, 12th Lancers.); Army L.S. & G.C., V.R., small letter reverse (1585 Fr., Mr. D. Smith. 12th Lancers); Turkish Crimea 1855, Sardinian issue (Dl. S. Smith. 12th Rl. Lanrs.) contemporary engraved naming, plugged at 12 o’clock and fitted with contemporary swivel bar suspension, all fitted with silver three-pronged riband buckles, mounted in framed display with contemporary silver plate inscribed ‘Presented to Farrier Major D. S. Smith, 12th Lancers, by the Farriers & Shoeing Smiths on his leaving the Regt. 20 Nov. 1873’, prong missing on one buckle, edge bruising and contact marks, therefore good fine, the L.S. & G.C. better (4) £800-1200

Daniel Selling Smith was born at Bangalore, India, in 1833, and attested for the 12th Lancers at Maidstone, Kent, on 5 November 1852. He was promoted to Corporal in August 1856; Sergeant, May 1858; resigned and appointed Farrier, November 1860; and Farrier Major, June 1864. He re-engaged at Sheffield for a further 12 years on 6 June 1864, and was discharged on 25 November 1873, ‘at his own request, free with pension after 21 years service.’ He served in the East Indies for 3 years 9 months, and in the Crimea for 1 year, and was ‘in possession of Crimean, Turkish & Indian Mutiny War Medals - also Medal for “Long Service & Good Conduct.”’ He afterwards resided in Hove, Sussex, and died there on 3 March 1888, aged 54.
