The extremely rare Abbas Hilmi Bravery Medal group of three awarded to Nafar Natum, Equatorial Battalion, Egyptian Army

Egypt, Khedivate
, Abbas Hilmi Bravery Medal, silver, unnamed; Khedive’s Sudan 1910-21, 1st issue, bronze, no clasp, unnamed as issued; Africa General Service 1902-56, 1 clasp, East Africa 1918 (7198 Nafar Natum Equatorial Bn. E.A.) mounted for display, generally good very fine (3) £2400-2800

Provenance: Spink, January 1988.

The Abbas Hilmi Bravery Medal was established in 1913 by the Khedive (Abbas II Hilmi Pasha) as a means of rewarding N.C.O.s and men of the Egyptian Army who distinguished themselves. The medal was promulgated in the Condominium by the Special Army Order (Khartoum) of 10 May 1913, for those “mentioned in despatches for meritorious or distinguished service in the field or before the enemy.”

Recommendations for the award were sent to the Military Secretary at Khartoum, and it was essentially the counterpart to the British D.C.M. The medal became obsolete with the downfall of the Abbas II Hilmi Pasha, one year after he had created it. As a consequence very few of these awards are known to exist.

Nafar Natum served with the 7th Company, Equatorial Battalion, Egyptian Army in operations against the Northern Turkana and kindred tribes April - June 1918.
