Geefs, winged figure emptying cornucopiæ over building, rev. wreath, named (Earl Russell, For Services), 75mm. Very fine, obverse better, patinated; in maroon fitted case of issue, a most interesting association item (£150-200)

Lord John Russell, 1st Earl (1792-1878), elected to the House of Commons as a Whig in 1813; espoused the causes of Catholic emancipation and electoral reform, 1828-31; Home Secretary 1835-9, liberalizing the government of Ireland; Prime Minister 1846-52; Foreign Secretary under Lord Palmerston, 1859-65, succeeding him as Prime Minister on the latter’s death, 1865; resigned 1866
