Phillp, laureate bust of George III left, rev. gateway decorated with College arms, edge engraved (Joannes Roughton Hogg mdcccxxxiv), 49mm (BHM 634; E 991). Minor rim knocks, extremely fine, very rare; in case (£500-600)

John Roughton Hogg (1811-67), curate of the Revd. Henry Francis Lyte (1793-1847), of Brixham, Devon, author of the hymn ‘Abide with Me’; Hogg later married Lyte’s daughter and became vicar of Torwood, Devon. Hogg’s parents are believed to have originally emanated from the Kettering area
