Royal Humane Society, Instituted 1774, a silver medal for proficiency in swimming exercise with reference to saving life from drowning, rescue scene, motto around, exergue engraved (Francis Holland School, 1914), rev. inscription, edge engraved (Ruth Hunting), 51mm; National Coal Board, silver medal for 10 Years’ in the Mines Rescue Service, arms and motto within wreath and inscription, rev. engraved (J. Lees, Ashby Rescue Station), 34 x 32mm [2]. Extremely fine; latter with ring for suspension (£40-60)

The Humane Society’s medal was instituted in 1882 and discontinued in 1939 because it was considered that the granting of awards for learning life saving skills was more appropriate to the Royal Society for Saving Life at Sea.
