18th Century Tokens, Essex, Hornchurch, George Cotton, Halfpence (3), crowned bust of Edward IV right, sloping top to 1 of date (2), revs. crowned arms, extended line under castle, rose at point, edge plain, 9.19g/6h (DH 33), short line under castle, mullet at point, 10.21g/6h (DH 33bis I); flat top to 1 of date, rev. similar, extended line under castle, rose at point, edge plain, 9.84g/6h (DH 34) [3]. Last a bronzed Proof, practically as struck, others fine but first scratched (£30-40)

George Cotton, who lived at Romford, ordered the Hornchurch tokens from Matthew Boulton in 1795 (
cf. Doty, CTCJ, June 1999, pp.20-4); it would appear that a total of 63 ‘specimens’ [or Proofs] were supplied to Cotton
