Adjoining the Canongate Church, the Burgh School was a neat two-story rectangular building erected in 1836. The lower story was intended as burial vaults; the upper story was the school room. The average number of children attending was 240, taught by three teachers, the principal of whom was James Stormonth. The school was supported by public subscription, by the funds of the burgh and by small school fees. Stormonth (1825-82), was declared bankrupt in March 1861 and appears to have moved to the Orkney Is.
