The Whitgift Middle School, founded in 1882, was located in Church street, occupying buildings originally used by the Croydon Poor School. In 1931 it moved to North End, Croydon and was renamed Trinity School of John Whitgift in 1954. Selhurst Grammar School opened in Scarbrook road in 1904 and closed in 1988. The Strand School, named after its central London basement location in what had been King’s College School, was originally an educational establishment set up to prepare boys for the civil service. The School moved to Elm Park, between Tulse Hill and Brixton Hill, in 1913. The School closed in 1979
