William Horan was born in 1874 at Freshwater, Isle of Wight. He attested for the Royal Garrison Artillery on 11 June 1888 aged 14 years. He served in India, Aden and Malta and was discharged on 30 April 1910 as Company Sergeant Major. He re-enlisted in the 121st Heavy Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery on 29 August 1914. He was discharged on being commissioned on 14 July 1916.

Edward Ware attested for the Royal Garrison Artillery and during the Great War served in the French theatre of war with the 50th Siege Battery from 2 October 1915. He received his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal in March 1920.
