John Clisham was born on the island of Inishbofin, County Galway, on 24 August 1874. A fisherman by trade, he joined the Royal Navy as a Stoker 2nd Class on 22 June 1897. He served aboard Magicienne from November 1897 to June 1901, during which period he took part in the Jubaland campaign. He was promoted to Stoker 1st Class shortly before his discharge on completion of 10 years’ service on 3 September 1907. He returned to the sea in the merchant service and died at sea aboard the S.S. Monarch on 15 December 1911, apparently committing suicide by deliberately jumping overboard, while en-route from Calcutta to Dundee with a cargo of jute. Sold with copied record of service and other research.
