A scarce Soviet 1990 ‘Civil War’ Order of the Red Star and 1986 ‘Afghanistan’ Order for Service to the Motherland pair awarded to Helicopter Commander Captain A. A. Akifiev, 292nd Independent Helicopter Regiment

Order of the Red Star, 2nd type, silver and enamel, reverse officially numbered ‘3835690’, with Monetny Dvor mint mark and screwback suspension; Order for Service to the Motherland in the Armed Forces of the Soviet Union, Third Class, silver and enamel, reverse officially numbered ‘71520’, with Monetny Dvor mint mark and screwback suspension, extremely fine, and the former one of the highest-known serial numbered Red Stars ever awarded (2) £600-800

Order of the Red Star awarded by Presidium of the U.S.S.R. on 24 January 1991:
‘On 1 August 1990, the Group of Special Purpose Armies of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the U.S.S.R., on two Mi-8 helicopters, while scouting, located a group of fighters in the region of point 3118.9 of Mt. Kachaldar, Nakhchivan Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic. Because of the skilful actions of Captain Akifiev’s crew, the helicopter was able to land in poor weather conditions on unfamiliar and unmarked place. Captain Akifiev displayed high piloting skills, valour and courage, and was able to land the group of soldiers which resulted in the capture of the armed fighters.
During his time of service, Captain Akifiev displayed himself to be a disciplined, literate and dependable officer. He is a pilot 3rd class. He has not had any accidents. He constantly works to raise this theoretical level. He has earned the respect of his friends and commanders.
He was discussed at a meeting of the constantly acting evaluation committee, report N. 18 on 20 September 1990.
Conclusion: For courage and valour displayed during military duties in conditions with a risk of life, he deserves to be awarded the Order of the Red Star.’

Order for Service to the Motherland in the Armed Forces of the Soviet Union, Third Class, awarded by Presidium of the U.S.S.R. on 9 September 1986.

Anatolii Anatolievich Akifiev was born in Belarus on 14 October 1963, and served in the Red Army from 1 April until 30 October 1981, and from 1 November 1982 until after the fall of the Soviet Union. He served with the Military Forces in Afghanistan from 20 September 1985 until 1 October 1986, during which period he was awarded the Order for Service to the Motherland in the Armed Forces of the Soviet Union, Third Class. He was promoted Captain on 4 February 1988, and his final appointment was as a Helicopter Commander with 292nd Independent Helicopter Regiment. For his courage and valour in Nakhchivan in modern day Azerbaijan, during the Civil War that preceded the break-up of the Soviet Union, he was awarded the Order of the Red Star, one of the last ever awards made by the U.S.S.R., and finally received his medal on 28 April 1992, four months after the final dissolution of the Soviet Union.
