Army L.S. & G.C., V.R., 3rd issue, small letter reverse (635. Pte. W. Etherington, 1st. Bn. R.B.) officially impressed naming, about extremely fine £80-100

William Etherington was born in Petersfield, Hampshire, in 1837, and attested for the Rifle Brigade at Winchester on 14 January 1860. Posted initially to the 3rd Battalion, he transferred to the 1st Battalion on 20 October 1861, and served with his new Battalion in Canada from 12 December of that year until 18 September 1870 (entitled to a Canada General Service Medal with clasps for Fenian Raid 1866 and Fenian Raid 1870). He was awarded his Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, together with a gratuity of £5, on 14 January 1886, before being discharged on 21 January 1890, after 30 years and 8 days’ service.
