Africa General Service 1902-56, 1 clasp, Somaliland 1902-04 (6343 Pte. J. Neville. 3rd Rifle Bde.) light contact marks, very fine and scarce £360-400

John Nevill(e) was born in the Parish of St Giles, London, and attested for the Rifle Brigade on 30 December 1898. He served with the 1st Battalion in South Africa from September 1900 (Queen’s medal with 2 clasps, King’s medal with 2 clasps). Posted to the 3rd Battalion he served in India from March 1902 to July 1903, and in Somaliland from 6 July 1903, where he was one of the section of 28 riflemen, under Captain M. G. E. Bell, selected to serve as No. 2 (Bengal) Company, British Mounted Infantry. He returned home in June 1904 and afterwards served in Aden from October 1904 to December 1905, and then in India until January 1911, when he returned to England. He was discharged on completion of his first period of engagement on 30 January 1911. Sold with full research including copied discharge papers and extracts from The Rifle Brigade Chronical 1903, which details the operations of the Mounted Infantry in Somaliland.
