William Eley was born at Chelmsford, Essex, in 1872 and attested for the Rifle Brigade at Warley on 1 January 1891. He served with the 1st Battalion in South Africa during the Boer War, before taking his discharge on 21 March 1902, after 11 years and 80 days’ service.
