Crimea 1854-56, 2 clasps, Alma, Sebastopol (Pte. J. Wines, 2d. Bn. Rifle Bge.) contemporarily engraved naming, minor edge bruising and contact marks, very fine £160-200

John Wines was born in Ilminster, Somerset, in 1820, and attested for the Rifle Brigade at Taunton, Somerset, on 16 February 1838. Transferring to the 2nd Battalion on 1 March 1854, he served with the Brigade in the Crimea, in Captain the Earl of Erroll’s Company, and was present at the Battle of the Alma, 20 September 1854, and the siege and capture of Sebastopol, and was twice wounded during the second attack on the Grand Redan, 8 September 1855, firstly by a musket ball to the right arm, and secondly by a musket ball to the right shoulder (service papers refer). He was discharged medically unfit on 19 February 1856, after 17 years and 352 days’ service.
