J. Redshaw served with the 2nd Battalion, Green Howards during the campaign in Waziristan against the Fakir of Ipi, and subsequently during the Second World War as part of 4th Indian Brigade, 26 Division in the Arakan. He transferred to the 1st Battalion Royal Northumberland Fusiliers, and served with them in the Korean War and in operations against the Mau Mau in Kenya.
