Frances Mary Macdonald, née Charles, was born in Sheffield on 14 August 1885, and trained as a nurse at Sheffield Union Hospital, Fir Vale. She served during the Great War with 3rd Northern General Hospital in India and Ceylon from 1916, and married James Macdonald in 1918. She was admitted as a Member of the College of Nursing on 11 December 1925, and remained a Member of the General Nursing Council throughout the Second World War.

Sold together with the recipient’s Sheffield Union Hospital Certificate of Efficiency, having completed four years nurse training, 1908-12; Central Midwives Board Certificate 1911; College of Nursing Certificate 1925 to ‘Francis Macdonald’; General Nursing Council for England and Wales certificates for 1945 and 1950; posting tube, addressed to ‘Miss F. Charles, Union Hospital, Firvale, Sheffield’; letter of recommendation 31 March 1925; passport of Francis Charles, bearing photograph, stamped ‘Bombay 1919’; Central Midwives Board rules booklet; autograph book bearing water-colours, sketches, poems, &c.; various loose sketches executed by patients; loose water-colour; photograph album, ‘Around 1916 India & Ceylon’ with photographs; group photograph of nurses with recipient identified; portrait photograph of recipient; loose photographs (70+) mostly India related.
