Pair: Second Lieutenant B. Martin, Royal Sussex Regiment, who served in Ireland following the Easter Rising, 1916, recording his time there in an annotated photograph album, before proceeding to France, where he was wounded in action on 6 October 1916.

Bertram Martin was born on 29 September 1890, and was educated at St. Luke’s Training College, Exeter. Commissioned Second Lieutenant on 23 September 1915, he served during the Great War, first with the Warwickshire Cadet Force, before going to Ireland following the Easter Rising in April 1916. He proceeded to France with the 7th Battalion Royal Sussex Regiment in August 1916, and was wounded in action on 6 October 1916. Admitted to No. 1 Red Cross Hospital, Le Touquet, he returned to England on 23 October 1916, still suffering from shell shock.

Sold together with the recipient’s Commission document appointing him a Second Lieutenant in the Infantry, dated 28 September 1915; Lord Lieutenant’s document appointing him an Officer of the Cadet Force of the County of Warwick, dated 25 October 1915; various telegrams to the recipient’s wife, including one reporting that he has been wounded, dated 6 October 1916; three Diocese of Truro Prayer Book Prize Certificates; various Royal Drawing Society and Municipal School of Art Certificates, with accompanying drawings; National Union of Teachers Certificate; Board of Education Certificate and Archbishop’s Certificate from Exeter Training College, both dated 1911; two Defence of the Realm Permit Books, both named to Mrs. Irene Bate Martin; a ‘For Active Service’ apron; large group photograph; and two large photograph albums, containing a large number of annotated postcards and photographs, including some of the recipient, the first predominately from his time at St. Luke’s Training College, Exeter; and the second from his time in Ireland with scenes from the ‘Irish Rebellion 1916’.
