Albert Anderton served pre-War with the Royal Artillery and, having been discharged to the Army Reserve, was recalled to the Colours on 4 July 1916. Posted to No. 387 Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery, Indian Expeditionary Force, he left behind at home in Manchester his wife Beatrice, who was expecting their first child, and sailed for the Middle East. He died of heat-stroke on active service on 22 August 1917, never seeing his son, and is buried in Basra War Cemetery, Iraq.

George Edmund Anderton, the son of Albert and Beatrice Anderton, was born in Manchester, and was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the Pioneer Corps on 11 September 1943. He served with the Pioneer Corps during the Second World War, and was promoted temporary Captain on 10 January 1945. He relinquished his Commission in May 1946, and was granted the honorary rank of Captain.
