James Thomas Hamblin was born at Bradfield, Berkshire, on 11 February 1894, and joined the Royal Navy as a Stoker 2nd Class on 26 March 1912. Promoted to Stoker 1st Class on 26 November of that year, whilst serving in H.M.S. Prince of Wales, he was injured on 22 July 1914 when he lost the end of the middle finger of his right hand after getting it caught in the electric strap of the main engine. He served during the Great War, firstly in H.M.S. Arrogant, and then at H.M.S. Attentive II, the shore base for the Dover Patrol, from 9 September 1915 until the end of the War, during which he qualified as a Coppersmith in 1917. Posted to H.M.S. Renown on 17 March 1920, he served in her for the duration of the Prince of Wales’s round the world tour of that year, before taking his discharge on 25 March 1924, after 12 years’ service. He subsequently joined the Royal Fleet Reserve, before finally being shore pensioned, together with a gratuity of £100, on 10 February 1934.

Sold together with the recipient’s Parchment Certificate of Service; Parchment Qualification in Stoker Ratings Certificate; Certificate of Wounds and Hurts; discharge letter; and a portrait photograph of the recipient in later life.
