William Gerald Bagnell was born in 1888 and was educated at Eton and the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. He was commissioned Ensign in the 4th (Royal Irish) Dragoon Guards on 8 February 1908 (in succession to Lieutenant Adrian Carton de Wiart, the future General and V.C. recipient), before transferring to the 3rd Dragoon Guards. He served during the Great War, attached to the 15th Hussars, on the Western Front from 11 September 1914, and was advanced to Captain on 2 April 1917. Appointed to the Remount Service on 11 February 1919, he relinquished his commission on 1 April 1920.
