Charles William Nelson was born in Wickersley, South Yorkshire, in 1874, and attested for the Coldstream Guards in 1892. He served with the Coldstream Guards in South Africa throughout the Boar War, and was promoted Transport Sergeant. He was discharged in 1904 and subsequently joined the Police Force, serving as a Police Constable in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, and was advanced to Inspector by 1924. He died on 13 November 1958.

Sold together with four postcard photographs of the recipient from different stages of his service career.
