Pair: Captain H. W. Milne, 74th Punjabis, Indian Army, late Duke of Connaught’s Own Sligo R.G.A. Militia, who was killed in action whilst attached to the Cameron Highlanders, 27 September 1915

Herbert Wardlaw Milne, of Dunbartonshire, was born in 1883 and was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the Duke of Connaught’s Own Sligo Royal Garrison Artillery Militia on 14 January 1902. He served on attachment to the 3rd Battalion, Leicestershire Regiment during the Boer War in South Africa, and was promoted Lieutenant on 12 April 1902. Transferring to the Bedfordshire Regiment, he was admitted to the Indian Army on 4 October 1905, and served with the 74th Punjabis, with whom he was awarded the Delhi Durbar Medal in 1911. Promoted Captain, he served on attachment as Adjutant to the 6th Battalion, Cameron Highlanders during the Great War, was killed in action on the Western Front on 27 September 1915. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Neuve-Chapelle Memorial, France. For his service during the Great War he was posthumously Mentioned in Despatches (London Gazette 1 January 1916).
