A Great War M.M. group of four awarded to Sergeant W. W. Jeffcock, Royal Field Artillery, later Major, 8th (Reigate) Surrey Home Guard

Walter William Jeffcock was born in Aynho, Northamptonshire, in 1892, and lived in Wokingham, Berkshire. Attesting for the Royal Field Artillery, he served during the Great War on the Western Front from 17 July 1915, and was awarded the Military Medal whilst serving as a Sergeant with ‘D’ (Howitzer) Battery, 87th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery, as part of 19th (Western) Division.

During the Second World War, Jeffcock served with the 8th (Reigate) Battalion, Surrey Home Guard, at first as Second in Command of ‘C’ Company, before being promoted to Major. He was also a Senior Air Warden with Air Raid Precautions. He died in Reigate in 1971.

Walter Jeffcock’s brother, Alfred Thomas Jeffcock, served as Company Sergeant Major with the 11th Battalion, Rifle Brigade; was awarded the D.C.M.; and was killed in action on 23 March 1918.
