D.C.M. London Gazette 30 June 1915:
‘For conspicuous gallantry, notably on the morning of the 11th April 1915 at St. Eloi, when he went out of his trench to bring in a badly wounded man. When unable alone to effect this he came back for assistance, returned, and brought the man in, although under fire and within 100 yards of the German trenches.’

Arthur Brownlee, of Grimsby, Lincolnshire, attested for the Lincolnshire Regiment, and served with the 1st Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front from 22 October 1914. Mentioned in Sir John French’s Despatch of 14 January 1915 (London Gazette 17 February 1915), he was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for gallantry at St. Eloi, whilst serving in “B” Company, and was presented with his D.C.M. by Major-General Ferrier, Commanding Officer of the Humber Defences, at a Parade in People’s Park, Grimsby, on 14 September 1915 (Grimsby Star refers). He was discharged on account of sickness on 10 October 1918, and received a Silver War Badge.
