M.C. London Gazette 14 November 1916: ‘Temp. Lt. Fabian Strachan Woodley, R. Muns. Fus. For conspicuous gallantry during operations. By his skill and determination he beat off three counter-attacks of the enemy, who were endeavouring to reach his trench. Four days later he led his men in two attacks with great pluck.’

Fabian Strachan Woodley was born on 19 July 1888, son of William Augustus Woodley, Solicitor, and Ada Constance (née Strachan). He was educated at Cheltenham College 1902-07, and University College, Oxford, 1907-10. Captain Royal Munster Fusiliers in W.W.I (M.C., wounded). Afterwards an English teacher and a poet of the Uranian school. His only book of poetry,
A Crown of Friendship, was published in 1921. He died at Winchester on 8 August 1957.
