Army L.S. & G.C. (2), V.R., 3rd issue, small letter reverse (1549 Cr. Sgt. D. Dougall. Highd. L.I.) minor official correction to surname; another, G.V.R., 3rd issue, Regular Army (..66100 Cpl. W. S. Scott A. & S.H.) together with two Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders silver prize medals, the reverses inscribed ‘Coy. Reels 1st Prize Pte. W. Scott’ and ‘Wm. Scott Piobaireachos 4th Prize’ respectively, suspension claw loose on latter, the first good very fine, the second with severe contact marks, therefore fine (4) £100-140

David Dougall was born in 1849 in Stirling, and attested for the 71st (Highland Light Infantry) Regiment at Glasgow on 26 August 1868. He joined the Regiment at the Curragh on 3 September, and embarked for Gibraltar the following month. He remained in the Mediterranean for the next 11 years, at Gibraltar, Malta, and Cyprus, returning home in March 1880. The next 13 years were spent at home stations. Promoted Corporal on 20 May 1871, and appointed Pipe-Major on 1 October 1874, Dougall was promoted Colour-Sergeant on 10 August 1881, and was awarded his Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 1 October 1886. He was discharged on 21 November 1893, after 25 years and 88 days’ service.

William Scott attested for the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders and served with the 2nd Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front as a Piper. He was wounded and taken prisoner of war at the Battle of Armentieres on 27 November 1915. Two other pipers of the Battalion were killed during this action and a third also taken prisoner.
Following the Great War he was posted to the 1st Battalion and served at Poona and Allahabad throughout the 1920’s, where he was active in Regimental Piping and dancing competitions. At the Battalion Highland Games at Wanowri in January-February 1921, he won 1st Prize in the Highland Fling for Novices, 3rd Prize in the Open Sword Dance, and 4th Prize in both Marches and Piobaireachos. He was promoted Corporal on 9 March 1926, and was subsequently awarded his Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal whilst serving with ‘B’ Company.
