Stephen Ernest Mowforth was born in Hull in 1875, the son of William and Susan Mowforth, and at the time of the 1901 Census he was living in Shipley, Yorkshire, when his employment is described as Primitive Methodist Lay Preacher. He entered the ministry later that year, and was appointed temporary Chaplain to the Forces, 4th Class, Army Chaplain’s Department on 11 March 1916. He served during the Great War in Iraq, other parts of the Middle East, and India, and was Mentioned in Despatches whilst serving with the Mesopotamian Expeditionary Force. He died in Thorpe Bay, Essex, on 25 November 1952.
