W. Hayward served as a Colour Sergeant with the 1st Battalion, York and Lancaster Regiment during the campaign in Egypt. On the latter date, after two hours of heavy fighting, the village of El-Teb was captured. The battalion were once again in action at Tamaai on the 13th March.
