Edward John Belsten was born in Redland, Bristol, Gloucestershire, in 1873 and attested for the Gloucestershire Regiment at Bristol on 20 June 1892. He served with the Regiment in Malta, November 1893-October 1895; Cyprus, October 1895-November 1896; India, February 1897-December 1899; South Africa, December 1899-August 1900; and Ceylon, August 1900-December 1902. He transferred to the Army Reserve on 6 August 1903 and was discharged on 19 June 1904, after 12 years’ service.
