George Wright was born at Dover, Kent, in 1872 and attested for the Royal Field Artillery at Chatham, Kent, on 16 January 1891. Transferring to the Army Reserve on 16 January 1898, he was recalled on the outbreak of the Boer War, and served with the 73rd Battery in South Africa from 3 November 1899 until 5 August 1900. He was discharged on 10 April 1902.
