Henry Underwood was born in Bristol, Gloucestershire, in 1871 and attested for the Gloucestershire Regiment there on 23 May 1893. He served with the Regiment in South Africa from 20 September 1899 until 23 August 1900, and was severely wounded in the foot at Rietfontein on 24 October 1899, in which action the regiment suffered 1 officer and 11 other ranks killed, and 6 officers and 98 other ranks wounded. He was discharged on 18 December 1905, after 12 years and 210 days’ service, and died at Clifton, Bristol, on 3 October 1943.
