H. C. Andrews served with the 5th (Royal Irish) Lancers in South Africa, and was killed in action (although the Regimental History lists him as dying of wounds) at Wagon Hill, Ladysmith on 6 January 1900, on which date the 5th Lancers helped repel a force of some 1,000 Boers who had attacked Wagon Hill, during the siege of Ladysmith. Such was the severity of the attack and the determined nature of the defence that three Victoria Crosses were awarded for this action. Andrews is commemorated on the 5th Lancers Memorial in St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Dublin.
