William Henry Brailsford was born in Nottingham in 1880 and attested for the Royal Artillery there on 20 February 1899, having previously served with the 4th (Militia) Battalion Derbyshire Regiment. He served with the Royal Garrison Artillery in South Africa, February-July 1900, and transferred to the Army Reserve in February 1906. He was discharged on 19 February 1911, after 12 years’ service.
