John Igoe was born in the Parish of Ballinakill, Ballymore, Galway, and attested for the 29th Foot at Liverpool on 14 May 1846, aged 21 years, a shoemaker by trade. The following month he was court-martialled for being absent without leave and imprisoned for two weeks. Thereafter he seems to have avoided further conflict with higher authority, being promoted Corporal in July 1850, and Sergeant in January 1852. He had by this time served in the Punjab campaign of 1848-49, including the Passage of the Chenab and the battles of Chilianwala and Goojerat (Medal with two Clasps). After further service in the Indian Mutiny of 1857-58, he returned with his regiment to England. He was discharged on 9 July 1867, being in possession of no fewer than 5 Good Conduct Badges, and was duly awarded the L.S. & G.C. medal with a Gratuity of £15 on 6 September 1867. He served for a further 14 years as a Sergeant on the Permanent Staff of the 3rd Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Sold with copied discharge papers and other research.
