N. von-Kursacoff), in named card box of issue; Memorial Plaque (Francis Edward Alexandra [sic] Nicolby Morreno von Kursacoff), in card holder and outer envelope addressed to ‘Mrs. P. L. von Kursacoff, 34 Duke Street, Jarrow-on-Tyne’, with Buckingham Palace enclosure, extremely fine, the number of Christian names on the Plaque scarce (3) £800-1200

Francis Edward Alexander Nicolby Morreno von Kursacoff was born in Riga, Latvia, on 20 August 1874, the son of Christian Ivan, Prince von Kursacoff and his wife Louise, Princess von Kursacoff and, having married Miss Polly Louisa Riches, of Jarrow, Co. Durham, took British nationality on 6 August 1912. He served as a Boatswain in the Mercantile Marine, using the name Edmund Morreno, and was killed in action during the Great War when his ship, the S.S. Elve, 899 tons, a general cargo ship heading to London from Oporto, was sunk by gunfire from the German submarine U-22 north-west of Finisterre on 11 October 1917, with the loss of all 29 hands on board. He is commemorated along with the rest of his crew on the Tower Hill Memorial.
