Stephen Samuel Jonas was born in Crediton, Devon, in 1887. He enlisted in the Royal Marine Light Infantry at Plymouth, in October 1915. Jonas served with the Royal Marine Brigade from June 1916, and served with the 2nd Royal Marine Battalion, Royal Naval Division, in the French theatre of war from 25 November 1916. He was killed in action 8 February 1917, and was buried in the Lonsdale Cemetery, Authuille, France.
