Three: Private Henry Hogg, 2nd Battalion, South Wales Borderers, a veteran of Tsingtao, China, 1914, he was drowned en-route to Gallipoli, off Skyros, during a torpedo attack on the Manitou, 16 April 1915

1914-15 Star (9983 Pte. H. Hogg. S. Wales Bord.); British War and Victory Medals (9983 Pte. H. Hogg. S. Wales Bord.) nearly extremely fine (3) £80-100

Henry Hogg, Private, 2nd Battalion, South Wales Borderers, was drowned at sea on 16 April 1916, and is commemorated by name on the Helles Memorial.

The regimental history describes the circumstances of Hogg’s death:

‘The battalion’s transport, following in the
Manitou, narrowly escaped destruction, for an audacious Turkish torpedo boat, having slipped out of Smyrna, intercepted her off Skyros and gave her crew and passengers eight minutes in which to quit the ship before it was torpedoed. Hastily and amid some confusion the boats were launched. One at least upset and some other men seem to have jumped overboard. Then the Turks discharged their three torpedoes, but all without success, whereupon the torpedo boat found it expedient to quit the scene, towards which British destroyers were hastening. Most of the men in the water were picked up and the Manitou continued its voyage, but the incident had resulted in the drowning of over 50 men, among them one man of the 2nd S.W.B., Private Hogg.’
