Pair: Captain T. E. Lewis, 5th Battalion, South Wales Borderers, killed in a bombing accident in August 1915

1914-15 Star (Capt. T. E. Lewis. S. Wales Bord.); Victory Medal (Capt. T. E. Lewis.) good very fine (2) £60-80

Trevor Edward Lewis was born on 13 October 1887, and educated at Clifton College, and Caius, Cambridge. As a Captain he landed in France with the 5th Battalion, South Wales Borderers, on 17 July 1915. His m.i.c. states that he was killed in action on 28 July 1915, but the true circumstances of his death are recorded in the regimental history:

‘Shortly before moving to Gorre the 5th had the misfortune to lose Captain T. E. Lewis in a bombing accident, in which Private Dart also was killed and Lieutenant B. O. Jones wounded. Captain Lewis’ death was much regretted. The first subaltern gazetted to the battalion, he had shown himself a keen and efficient soldier and an admirable bombing instructor; it was hard to lose so promising an officer by an accident behind the lines.’

This is a 1914-15 Star not a 1914 Star
