Thomas Walsh Gutherie was born at Dunnichen, Angus, on 9 August 1872, and went out to South Africa prior to the outbreak of the 2nd Boer War, where he joined the part time volunteer forces. He served with the Kimberley Volunteer Regiment during the four month defence of the town, from 15 October 1899 until the siege was lifted on 15 February 1900, and is listed on the medal roll as ‘Non-effective, 1 March 1900’.

Gutherie was one of three Pipers who served in the Kimberley Volunteer Regiment during the Defence of Kimberley. Sold together with a photographic image of the recipient.
