Pair: Staff Sergeant Farrier William Collins, 9th Lancers

William Collins was born in the Parish of Belsham St Paul, Clare, Essex, and enlisted for the 9th Lancers at Bury St Edmunds on 29 September 1874, aged 20 years 5 months, a labourer by trade, with previous service in the West Suffolk Militia. He served in the Afghan campaign of 1879-80 and received the medal for Afghanistan with clasps for Kabul and Kandahar, and the Bronze Star for Kabul-Kandahar March. He was appointed Shoeing Smith in March 1882, and Assistant Farrier in March 1885, and was promoted to Sergeant Farrier in November 1890, and to Staff Sergeant Farrier in September 1895. He was discharged at Canterbury on termination of his second period of engagement on 2 October 1897. Sold with copied discharge papers.
