Henry Gable was born in Lee, Kent, in October 1851. He entered the Royal Navy as Boy Second Class in March 1867, and advanced to Able Seaman in January 1873. He served as Petty Officer in H.M.S. Orontes, February 1878 - January 1880. Gable initially served as Chief Petty Officer during the Egyptian campaign of 1882-89 with H.M.S. Inconstant, before transferring to H.M.S. Dolphin for the remainder. He was discharged as Quarter Master to ‘Shore’, in June 1905.
