B.E.M. London Gazette 21 December 1944: ‘In recognition of gallant and distinguished services in Italy.’ The recommendation states:

‘During the period 10 February to 20 March [1944] Cpl Smith [gazetted as Lance-Sergeant] was responsible for the maintenance of the folding boat bridge (Pateley Bridge) across the Garigliano River. This NCO by his cheerfulness and energy was an example to his men. Twice, when the river was running fast and the bridge had been damaged by shell fire, Cpl Smith went out in an Assault Boat with one Sapper to carry out essential repairs. On other occasions when near misses appeared to have damaged the boats, Cpl Smith went out and inspected the bridge, while it was still a target for the enemy artillery. Cpl Smith displayed high qualities of leadership and example and was an inspiration to the men of his maintenance party.’
