James Ashcroft was born in Wigan, Lancashire, and attested there for the York and Lancaster Regiment having previously served with the Highland Light Infantry. He served with the 8th Battalion during the Great War, and was killed in action on the Western Front on 18 September 1917. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.
